  • Bridging the Power Gap by Africa for Africa: African School of Regulation
1 August, 2024

The first pan-African School of Regulation (ASR), now incubated by the ACBF in Accra, Ghana, is set to strengthen the African energy sector’s capacity to support the Agenda 2063 goals for sustainable development on the continent. ASR unveiled its first hybrid course in April 2024: "Power Sector Regulation in Africa." This program goes beyond information delivery; it equips mid-career professionals with practical skills for navigating the continent's diverse regulatory landscape. The course includes intensive collaboration and knowledge exchange, empowering participants to "learn the trade" and become critical players in shaping a more efficient African power sector. ACBF joined the conversation to bridge the power gap and support inclusive development!

Course Objective
The objective of this course on “Power Sector Regulation in Africa” is to provide a comprehensive overview and a sound understanding of the fundamentals of power sector regulation in the diverse contexts of African countries. The course goes far beyond “having an informed opinion” on regulatory issues. It is designed with the practical objective of “learning the trade” of regulatory practice at a level that can be achieved over the duration of the course. The course will provide a solid platform on which to build later, with specialised training on different topics.

The power sector in many African countries presents unique challenges that require distinctive solutions, not by copying and pasting international best practices but by creatively adapting them or inventing new ones, always starting from the basic principles of economic regulation and an understanding of the engineering aspects of this complex industry. This is the mindset the course seeks to stimulate in the participants.

“The ASR will be instrumental in guiding Africa towards a sustainable energy transition, building required capacities, creating an environment for innovative solutions to regulation challenges, and creating an ecosystem for increased investments,” said Mamadou Biteye, ACBF Executive Secretary. “Central to this vision is promoting skills development, knowledge sharing, and sustainable jobs, including fostering the representation of women and young people in a field typically dominated by men.” Read the Press Release and check out the video.
